Beer Review: SingleCut Softly Spoken Magic Spells Double IPA

IMG_2594

I finally got my hands on this beer! Softly Spoken Magic Spells from SingleCut has been near the top of my want list for quite some time now. SingleCut has been around in Queens for a few years now but has recently become one of the hype breweries in NYC. Softly Spoken Magic Spells comes in at 8.6% ABV.

Appearance: Hazy copper honey color. Not much of a head on this or lacing for that matter. Active carbonation. Huge fan of the bottle art and also the label itself, its that nice matte quality paper.

Nose: Pineapple, grapefruit, green apple, tropical fruit and candied fruit. It has a sugary sweetness as well. Super strong dank aroma. Some of the usual suspects for big East Coast double IPA aromas but very pronounced and easily distinguishable.

Taste/Mouth: Nice bitterness and lots of great fruit flavors. Orange zest, pineapple, grapefruit and mango really stick out. Really drinkable for 8.6% and no heat from the alcohol is present. Light feel for a double IPA with moderate carbonation. Chewy and juicy. A really flavorful double, a tropical bomb if you will.

Price/Availability: Rotating availability, around $9 for the bottle.

Overall: A beer certainly worth mentioning and definitely in contention for NY’s best Double IPA. This was a great first impression of SingleCut for me, who I had heard a lot about and they delivered with Softly Spoken Magic Spells. This is a fantastic Double IPA that is absolutely worth hunting down or trading for, perfection!

Grade: A+
